Many guidebooks advise tourists to observe where the locals eat when exploring a new town, because they will not be disappointed in those restaurants. In this tour, we have collected many restaurants and dishes from Győr, that are almost legends now. We have compiled the list so we can find everything in the city centre, and so we can combine gastronomy with a cosy sightseeing tour. Let us see the order of the meals: have a grilled mushroom sandwich for snack at 10 a.m., then have a cup of good strong black coffee and have lunch in the Milk Bar! As a dessert, try the divine Napoleon cake in the afternoon and the Venice Dream ice cream in the summer, then book a table at the Matróz for dinner! Enjoy your meal!

If you enter the Arrabona Food Bar, you will feel as if you have gone back to the 1980s. You will have a real retro feeling. This is no coincidence: the current furnishings were made more than thirty years ago. Even today, the same map of Győr hangs on the wall the guests saw at the very beginning. The counter, the furniture, and the “dining” plate also only serve to reinforce this feeling.

The legendary “Arrabona” sandwiches are still made in the same forty-year-old oven that was used at the beginning of the food bar’s history. The success is unbroken. Even today, 30 to 40 kg of grilled mushroom sandwiches are made according to the original recipe only for take-away, and much more is consumed in the bar!

The Bécsi (Vienna) Café has been welcoming its guests who long for a cup of delicious coffee, sweets, relaxation, and a good chat since August 1986. Its popularity is unchanged. The café with its own terrace is located in the heart of Győr's city centre, in the "Viennese courtyard" surrounded by Arany János Street and Baross Gábor Street. If you enter, the atmosphere of the peaceful café will captivate you. Refined elegance.

For their coffee specialities, they use high-quality coffee directly imported from Italy.

The Milk Food Bar is a historical “snack bar” with fast service. They offer their customers fresh, home-cooked food and a wide selection of meals every day. Fresh roasts, soups, vegetables, desserts, salads, and many more specialities tempt the customers.

They often queue, even in the rain, and that cannot be a coincidence.

The Bergmann Sweets Shop was founded by master confectioner Imre Bergmann in Győr in the spring of 1939. His two sons also learned the art of confectionery. One of them took over the shop in the Nádorváros district of Győr, and opened a sweets shop in the city centre, and the other son sells his tasty cakes and pastries in his two shops in Balatonfüred.

Undoubtedly, the Bergmann Sweets Shop’s best-known speciality is the Napoleon cake, which is made from crispy, buttered layers filled with egg and vanilla cream and whipped cream and topped with caramel fondant. Its recipe has not been changed since 1939; this is the secret of their success. Many people share the view that they have never eaten a better Napoleon cake than Bergmann’s.

Orange, chocolate, Floating Islands on a vanilla base. With this creation in 2002, Tamás Varga, the ice cream maker from Győr won the award “Ice Cream of the Year” and gained national recognition. The ice cream was named “Dream of Venice,” and its success has been tremendous among the customers of ice cream parlours since then.

Located in the Dunakapu (Danube’s Gate) Square, the restaurant Matróz Danube Inn (Dunaparti Kisvendéglő), with a Hungarian cuisine, is popular not only among the locals but also among tourists. The Matróz (Sailor) is not just a place for the people of Győr, but a legend. The nostalgic restaurant with chequered tablecloths, the favourite fish soup of the locals, the famous vinegar fish of Szigetköz (Little Rye Island) and the fresh homemade crackling scones every morning.
