When you look up at them, you will see the past come to life. They each keep a page of living history and tell the story to those who will listen. Some are old, some new, some legendary, some antique, some modern, some made of wood and others of metal, some colorful, some somber. Their common trait, however, is that they all add something special to the inimitable atmosphere of the downtown. They provide sights to behold 24/7, they are places to meet up at and serve as town curiosities. These are the trade signs of Győr. We have collected a few of these for you to seek out and you may also want to add your favorites to the list.
The emblematic trade sign of the walking street in the city of Győr is the Anchor which once advertised an ironmonger's. Today, there is a Chinese shop in its place, but this piece of history can still be viewed by locals and tourists alike.

The trade sign was located between the two shops at Dr. Kovács Pál Street 1 and belonged to Ernő Bangha, a merchant of spices and delicatessen.
At that time, the beautifully carved wood was protected from the sun and rain by a metal roof. We do not know exactly when it was placed above the building's entrance.

The Lachmann family dealt mainly in the production and sale of small-series men's clothing. The trade sign, depicting a pair a scissors hangs above their oldest shop and indicates that the tailoring service still operates today as it has for over 100 years.
Back then, János Lachmann, Sr. tailored clothing to order, but later he also dealt in off-the-rack production. The family-run business expanded to selling different domestic and foreign brands of clothing. However, the trade sign depicting a pair of scissors that hangs above their oldest shop tells us that the tailoring service still operates to this day and you can still purchase a famous Lachmann suit, a pair of trousers or a jacket.

A family in Győr has been dealing in blue dyeing since 1906, their shop is located on the corner of Dr. Kovács Pál Street and Jedlik Ányos Street. The trade sign hanging above depicts a blue-dyeing girl and was made by Ferenc Lebó, a sculptor from Győr, in 2015.
The trade sign in the street, along with others like it (you can recognize them by their uniform frames) that still can be found have been preserved thanks to the project titled 'Bustling Downtown.' Have a look around the shop too as the tradition of blue-dyeing has recently been added to the UNESCO Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage.

The Golden Ship trade sign originally ornamented the building at Széchenyi Square 1 where a spice and delicatessen shop operated. Later, the shop along with its trade sign was moved to its current location. In 1940 a new trade sign, the work of Bandi Schima replaced the old one which is now in the city museum. The 'new' trade sign has become the most renowned and beautiful of all the Győr trade signs. It is still in the same place today, but it now advertises a pharmacy.
The Golden Ship trade sign made of gold-plated metal originally ornamented the building located at Széchenyi Square 1 where Ferenc Haagen's shop, dealing in goods from the colonies as well as spices operated. It is first mentioned in writing in 1847, we do not know who the author was. The business's later owner Vollnhofer moved the shop to where Jedlik Ányos Street is today and with it, he moved the trade sign as well. Béla Tőke purchased the business in 1911 and as the trade sign had been significantly damaged being kept out in the open, instead of having it restored, a new one was ordered from industrial artist Bandi Schima of Győr. The new trade sign was similar to Christopher Columbus's ship, the Santa Maria. The new Golden ship replaced the old one in 1940, the former trade sign is now in the Flóris Rómer Museum of Art and History. Győr's most beautiful and famous trade sign still stands on the corner of Jedlik Ányos Street and Dr. Kovács Pál Street and has been advertising the pharmacy named for it, the Aranyhajó Patika (Golden Ship Pharmacy), since1991.

The wrought-iron and lead-glass work depicting an umbrella, a pair of scissors and knives was chosen as the best Hungarian trade sign in 2005 by a panel of experts. The ornaments of the Hoffmann family's Győr shop were designed by Imre Nyuli, wrought by József Csizmazia and finalized by László Hefter, glass-worker and recipient of the Noémi Ferenczy Prize.
The grindstone, umbrella repair and fine steel wares shop has been passed on from father to son for over 100 years. It is worth visiting the shop iF only to view the family business's memorabilia: fine scissors belonging in a museum, pocket knives, old, faded photographs of the family business from before the war. And of course, the colorful commercials advertising Hoffman's grindstone that audiences could see before films at the cinema, something that was still quite a sensation at the time.

This work by Ferenc Lebó once ornamented a fishmonger's on Apáca Street. Today it is not used for its original function, but it fits perfectly into its new surroundings in Hal (Fish) Lane in the historical downtown among the other trade signs upholding the memory of the golden age of crafts and tradesmen.

The tradition of the Iron Log (Stock im Eisen) comes from German-speaking countries. The main idea is that when a tradesman's apprentice arrives at the city on his guildsman's journey, he strikes a nail into the city's iron log. The Győr Log, however, has a bit of a different story: when Mátyás Zittrisch opened his spice shop and delicatessen named 'To the iron log' in the middle of the 19th century, he had an appropriate trade sign made with nails from a factory.
From close up, we can see that the mostly uniformly sized nail heads cover the trunk in an orderly fashion, meaning this was not the occasional nail being hit into the log (as the Győr legend has it), but the work of a master locksmith.

A blackbird sits in a nest built on the branch of an oak tree on the corner of Liszt Ferenc Street and Saru Lane. On the inner side of the two larger acorns, there are two holes which most likely served to light the blackbird's nest. The trade sign first advertised a grocery and later a restaurant.
The merchant Ferencz Rigó had no trade sign for his shop when Béla Tőke purchased the shop from him in 1938 for his daughter. The Tőke family commissioned a trade sign from Bandi Schima that year. Its motif and name reference Ferencz Rigó (rigó means blackbird in Hungarian), a man greatly respected in the community and his popular shop. The trade sign later saw to popularizing the restaurant.
