2021. July 15.
There is almost everything on the tour’s drink menu: spritzer, wine, spirits, beer and, moreover, delicious cocktails. We show a few places in our local region where such tasty drinks can be found. In terms of the history of culture, we can be most proud of the spritzer, and we will find out the whys during the tour. Be careful while tasting and drink in moderation, as you are riding a bike!
(We only mention in parentheses, if you wish to taste them, pay attention to the order, because you know: "Wine after beer, always - beer after wine, torments you.")
One of the newest decorative fountains in the centre of Győr was completed in November 2011; the 365 kg soda siphon was created by the glass artist László Hefter from Győr.
Ányos Jedlik, a Benedictine monk, natural scientist and inventor (1800-1895), taught at the Benedictine secondary grammar school in Győr, and spent a significant part of his life in this town of the Little Hungarian Plain (Kisalföld). In addition to the discovery of the principle of dynamo, his name is also associated with the production of artificial carbonated water and the founding of soda water production. The device, which produced sparkling water quickly and cheaply, began its blessed operation in the Benedictine monastery of Győr in 1829. The fountain commemorates this event.
The soda siphon is also one of the symbols of the city, and the soda water itself is a Hungaricum.
Jedlik Ányos, a Benedictine monk and natural scientist, is also known as the father of the spritzer, because he was the first to mix soda water with wine. It is said about the birth of the spritzer that Jedlik, while presenting his soda bottle, “splashed” soda water into wine in the cellar of the reform-era writer and politician András Fáy in Fót, at harvest time.
The pair of sculptures in the Széchenyi Square, praising the work of Tibor Rieger, commemorates Ányos Jedlik and his cousin, Gergely Czuczor. The monument was inaugurated in the year of the 200th anniversary of the birth of these two famous citizens of Győr.
The Visitor Centre of Győr has a permanent exhibition that shows the most beautiful soda bottles. 150 bottles made in Győr and owned by collectors who have some connection to Győr are shown in the glass cabinets. In addition to the most beautiful and most exciting bottles, we can see pharmacy siphons and a number of early buckled and spherical glass bottles. In addition to the soda bottles, we can browse through original documents on the history of soda water production or Jedlik's records.
In honour of the spritzer, a spritzer festival is held in the city centre with great success every year.
The Iron Rooster Brewery in Győrújbarát, founded by the brewer Norbert Vida, takes you into the world of craft beers. You can buy many beer specialities in its shop. At the beer tasting events, one can learn about the brewing process and sneak a look behind the scenes. Appointments can be made from 2 persons at the pre-announced dates. Do not miss it!
The Szurdik, one of the largest steep-walled deep detritus valleys in Europe is found in Nyúl. A narrow road leads across the 8-10-metre-wide valley, which is bordered by 15- to 20-metre-high vertical walls. From the loess wall next to it, especially on the Vaskapu (Iron Gate) Road, the characteristic wine cellars carved into the wall follow each other, and 6 to 10 metres long, about 2 metres wide and one hundred- to two-hundred-year-old structures are not uncommon. These cellar entrances made of stone or brick are really cosy! At the end of the trip, you can taste fine wines in the Sons of Wind (Szél Fiai) Inn & Cellarium. (only in moderation, you ride a bike!).
A pálinka (fruit spirit) distillery has been operating at the foot of the Pannonhalma Castle Hill since 1917, and the distillery, in its current state, has been making the main Hungarian beverage, the pálinka, which is considered a Hungaricum, since 2007.
The Pannonhalma Pálinkarium is one of the most beautiful show distilleries in Hungary. In their pálinka tasting programs, you can also get a glimpse into every process of distillation. In addition to the sight, the scents will also enchant you.

Imprints of the Baroque age
Complicated patterns, rich ornamentation, monumentality, strong contrasts and dynamism, these are the main stylistic traits of the Baroque age. The city of Győr is almost synonymous with Baroque becoming the defining style of art during the Turkish occupation of Hungary, as it is considered to be one of the most important centers of the Baroque period. However, the style was popular in other towns and villages of the region too. Seek out these beautiful buildings and sculptures and experience the spirit of the Baroque period.
