Árpád Tree

Hungary, 9179 Hédervár Boldogasszony sor

The English oak is one of Hédervár's symbols. This is most likely one of Hungary's oldest trees. According to folk tradition, it is 1000 years old and Prince Árpád tied his horse to the trunk of the tree when he was resting here with his troops in 907 preparing for the Battle of Pozsony (Bratislava). The scarring on the tree-trunk is said to be the markings made by the tether.

Under the stone bulwark of the tree, there is a furnace-like building. According to the legend of the loaves of bread that turned to stone, in 1240 a woman was baking bread when she was surprised by the invading Tatar army. She cursed the bread and turned loaves to stone so that the enemy could not eat them.

Millennial Memorial Cross and Border Stone

The memorial double cross of the Millennium was given to the village by the Kisalföld Forestry in 2001 to commemorate the Conquest. Before this, a border stone from 1766 was marked the place. The stone marked the areas of Abda, Ikrény, and Győr where the borders of the three municipalities meet. It is most likely that the stone was set in its original place to settle a dispute over lands.

Statue of Saint John of Nepomuk

When fortifying the flood embankment in 1954 the statue was accidentally knocked over. It lay in the ditch for 30 years before József Pósfai, art restorer supplemented and restored the sculpture which was set by the municipality, not in its original place, but in the park behind the church. It was consecrated on August 20, 1992. The state of the statue had significantly deteriorated by 2011. With the support of the local Roman Catholic congregation, the local government and private persons, the stone sculptor György Böcskei restored the statue. The County Bishop Dr. Lajos Pápai was asked to bless it.

Church of the Holy Cross

The Romanesque parish church was likely built in the 1260s. The 15th century Saint Laslo depiction on the northern wall is unique. The crooked cone-shaped towers are ornamented with Gothic turrets.

Obelisk

For a long time after the battle of June 28, 1849, the fate of 273 soldiers was unknown. Workers digging the new riverbed during the regulation of the Rábca (1886-1893) discovered a mass grave. The coffee-colored overcoats served to identify the dead and the fate of the vanished soldiers became known. The case spurred the Győr and local communities into action. Students of the Győr Law Academy organized a fundraiser to build a memorial. The Győr Gazette reported almost daily on how much had been collected. Using the donations, the fallen heroes were given a proper burial and a ceremony was held in their honor with an Obelisk raised above their final resting place.

Rákóczi Memorial

According to legend, on May 25, 1702, the carriage of Ferenc Rákóczi II, who was seized and taken captive, was traversing the Abda bridge when a soldier fishing on the bank of the Rábca gifted a catfish to the prisoner. Rákóczi threw the fish back into the water with the following words: 'Great is the God of the Hungarians, may He grant me back my liberty as I return this fish to freedom.'

Rural Baroque Houses

In the center of the municipality of Halászi, there are two gabled Rural Baroque houses beside each other, the Neuberger House and the Fazekas House. These are masterpieces of folk architecture from approximately the beginning of the 19th century.
