You will partake in an extraordinary literature lesson if you choose this tour. We will introduce you to a collection of poets and writers associated with the city of Győr: maybe they were born here, or perhaps they died here, they studied, worked or became famous here. All of their memories are maintained by the associated municipality; seek them out and pay a moment’s respect to their memories.
The priest and poet László Mécs was the most popular and influential writer of religious poetry between the two World Wars. He died in Pannonhalma and his legacy is maintained by the Benedictine monks here. His grave can be found in the Assumption of Our Lady chapel of the Abbey.

The Erzsébet Galgóczy Memorial Room is located in the side wing of the Bezerédj Castle. The writer's study and 'farmhouse room' from her Budapest apartment can be seen here. Documents, manuscripts and received honors commemorate her life's work and main stations of her literary career. Visitors can become acquainted with the environment in which the author lived and worked.
The Kossuth Prize-winning Hungarian author and screenwriter was born in Győr-Ménfőcsanak (then called Ménfő) and died here as well. A memorial room was created to honor the author in the side-wing of the Bezerédj Castle. The 100 m2 spacious, arched hall showcases the study and so-called 'farmhouse room' from the author's Budapest apartment. In the middle we see testaments to her short but prolific career: documents, manuscripts, received certificates and accolades as well as objects that were close to the author and her published volumes.

Miklós Radnóti, the excellent modern Hungarian poet was shot in 1944 on the road to Abda. The statue of Miklós Radnóti on the outskirts of Győr along the road leading toward Abda marks the place where the poet was shot into a mass grave at the end of the Second World War. The full-figure granite statue is the work of Miklós Melocco, it depicts the poet wearing a shroud, his head bowed toward the ground.
A magyar-francia szakos középiskolai tanár a modern magyar líra kiemelkedő képviselőjeként vált híressé.

On the trail of the Romans - Ripa Pannonica
From Britain to Mesopotamia, the Roman Empire conquered the entirety of the Mediterranean coastal regions and at its peak, controlled a 6 000 000 km stretch of dry land. Defending such an expansive empire that was also very diverse geographically and culturally was only possible under very organized conditions. The several thousand kilometer long Limes (Latin: “path”) served this purpose, the borderline traversing thousands of kilometers across mountains and valleys, winding along the river lines was given the name “ripa.” The section of Roman limes along the Danube in Hungary bears the name Ripa Pannonica. Visit each of the municipalities where the remnants of the limes can be seen. And while you're on the tour, do not forget that you are at a potential World Heritage sight, as this section of the limes is among the Hungarian sights on the UNESCO world heritage tentative list.
