From Britain to Mesopotamia, the Roman Empire conquered the entirety of the Mediterranean coastal regions and at its peak, controlled a 6 000 000 km stretch of dry land. Defending such an expansive empire that was also very diverse geographically and culturally was only possible under very organized conditions. The several thousand kilometer long Limes (Latin: “path”) served this purpose, the borderline traversing thousands of kilometers across mountains and valleys, winding along the river lines was given the name “ripa.” The section of Roman limes along the Danube in Hungary bears the name Ripa Pannonica. Visit each of the municipalities where the remnants of the limes can be seen. And while you're on the tour, do not forget that you are at a potential World Heritage sight, as this section of the limes is among the Hungarian sights on the UNESCO world heritage tentative list.
The cobblestone road running through the city dates back to Roman times.

The present-day Káptalandomb (Chapter Hill), the ancient core of the town, lies at the junction of the Rába and the Moson-Danube rivers. According to archaeological findings, it was inhabited, among others, by Illyrians, Scythians, and Celts. The probably Celtic name of the river Raba is found in Arrabona, the Roman name of the city. Here the important roads coming from Savaria (Szombathely) and Sopianae (Pécs) merge with the limes road, so it is not a coincidence that this region was already occupied by an auxiliary force during the reign of Claudius in the middle of the first century. Later, after the construction of the permanent stone fortress, the town maintained its importance, and so, at the beginning of the 2nd century, it received ala Ulpia contariorum milliaria, the only double-sized cavalry of Pannonia superior as garrison. It is believed that this unit remained the garrison of Arrabona until the late Roman times.
You can find Roman relics in the Castle Casemate’s Stone Collection.

IThe Roman commander Tiberius conquered Pannonia in 9 AD and Transdanubia as a part of the province of Pannonia became a part of the Empire as a border province. In the 2nd century, a Roman military fortification was built in Barátföldpuszta, which belongs to Lébény, as a part of the border protection system. The milestone which once stood on the road by the fortification was recovered from here during the course of archeological excavations. The stone column, an artifact upholding the memory of times long past, today ornaments the yard of a primary school.

While walking in Mosonmagyaróvár one would search for the remains of the Ad Flexum Roman camp in vain, because, apart from the stone collection of the Hanság Museum, only a few exhibits have remained from the once populous Roman settlement named after the Moson-Danube bend. Nothing was left from the camp on the surface, and what is stranger: not even under the surface. Ad Flexum simply disappeared from the face of the earth. The barbarians and the weather usually devastated only to ground level, so the question may arise what had happened in Magyaróvár. Find it out in the Hanság Museum!

A collection of artifacts from Roman times in the town of Oroszvár located on the limes.
The limes road divided into two branches east of Carnuntum. The real limes road continued to follow the Danube whilst the other circumvented the Hainburg mountain from the south and headed straight for Ad flexum. Along the other road, we will soon arrive at the fort of Gerulata (Oroszvár-Rusovce) located in modern day Slovakia. Ágost Sőtér identified Gerulata over 100 years ago. The fort stands in the northwestern part of modern-day Rusovce not far from the old Danube riverbed.

Along the Danube by bike
Anyone who regularly searches for tours on the website may come across headlines that are not clear, and the type of the tour is not obvious at first sight. In this case, however, the name of the bike tour clearly reveals what the tourists who choose this route can expect. Using the bike path along the Danube, we invite you to take the 64 km long cycle tour, where the untouched “European rainforests” and the man-made Danube landscape are alternating. The route starts and ends in the village of Hamuliakovo (Gútor), so you do not need to worry about getting back to your car.
Strike a pose!
Have you ever taken a selfie with a statue of a potato beetle or fountain made of soda water bottles? Pose with unique, interesting pieces of public artwork that give you a glimpse into the past. Seek out the Szigetköz commercial railways memorial built in memory of the largely forgotten local company, visit one of the former ports, and while your there taste grandmother’s fresh baked bread. And of course, do not forget to take lots of photos.
Introducing Szigetköz
When we travel, there is one important thing we are all curious about apart from the sights: the local food and drink offerings. Many of us like to taste these because, as they say, each meal is an adventure. We highly recommend that you partake of the regional Szigetköz dishes, try local products and refreshments. Have a mid morning snack at Lipóti Bakery, eat lunch at a traditional restaurant in Felső-Szigetköz, enjoy a cold beer in the afternoon (pace yourself!) and/or have a coffee and try the vinegar fish in Győr. Enjoy your meal!
