2021. June 16.

One of the oldest wine regions of Hungary, dynamically developing wineries, quality wine production, beautiful countryside that attracts the visitors, millennial culture and world heritage site, rows of cellars, tasty wines: this is the Pannonhalma wine region. Discover the wineries in the varied vineyards; taste the heavenly juices and discover the other sights of the area!

Though it is unusual, we have put together several mini tours for you within the tour, typically with two wineries ‘in the lead role’, so you can comfortably explore, on foot, the countryside and taste the fruit of the vineyards everywhere, over several days.

The list of wineries is only a short one. What else would you add, and what would be the theme of the new mini wine tour?

Tour planning

The Herold Cellar is located at the foot of the Archabbey of Pannonhalma, in the Chestnut Gully (Gesztenyés-horog), in the immediate neighbourhood of the old-new abbey cellars. The cellar has a history of more than 800 years. In previous centuries, the Benedictine monks used this cellar and the other cellars on both sides of the road leading from the Main Square of Pannonhalma to the abbey as a so-called tithe cellar. Wine was stored in these cellars for several years after the nationalization, and then mushrooms were grown in the 1960s and 1970s. The Herold family bought the place in 2010, which, in those days, had not been used for years. The hand-carved loess and sandstone cellar was created by carefully stacking nearly 100,000 slitted bricks after the cross-section had been expanded, thus gaining its final form in 2014.

The Herold Cellar is one of the youngest wineries in the Pannonhalma Wine Region; its history began in 2009 with the purchase of a 0.5-hectare, 40-year-old Welschriesling vineyard in Pannonhalma. The Herold Cellar was the first to plant the fragrant yellow muscat in the wine region.

The welcoming interior and terrace of the cellar are really cosy; the owners often organize wine dinners.

The lookout tower on the administrative border of the villages of Győrújbarát and Nyúl was opened in 2018, based on a geodetic measuring tower built in 1977. The building is located on the 3rd highest hill of the Sokoró mound region at 312.9 metres above sea level.

There are 60 steps to reach the terrace at the top of the 11.7 m high tower, which has been widened and surrounded by a 1.1 m high wood lattice guardrail.

Similar to the Herold, the Hangyál family also appeared as a new generation in the wine region. The centre of their estate is located in one of the most beautiful parts of the village of Nyúl, on the Héma Peak, where you can enjoy the wonderful panorama: one can see the church of Nyúl, the Archabbey of Pannonhalma, and even the mountains of Vértes from here. Their modern show winery was built next to the teacher’s house and maid's house, built in 1904 and left in their original form. Tradition and modernity fit together nicely here.

It is an interesting fact that there is the oldest cherry tree of the village in their garden, its branches already hang down to the earth, so no one has to stretch above for the abundant harvest.

Balázs Hangyál and his family are not only excellent winemakers, but also extremely creative programme organizers. The winery near the Lilahegy Lookout Tower awaits visitors with a wine terrace in the summer, the attunement to Advent is helped by a mulled wine cooking competition, and the tickets for the musical-gastro programme called “Joy Dance at the Hangyáls” in July are sold out very quickly.

And how this mini wine tour was named: during the Valentine's Day and the flowering of the grapes in the spring, the two wineries organize a full-day vineyard walking tour, where they show their most important production areas (of course, while tasting their fine wines). Although the 17 km distance may seem to be too long at first reading, but the walkers can have a rest several times, and the dazzling sight makes you forget about any potential fatigue, so even novice hikers can boldly embark on it.

If you wish to reach these two wineries on a special route, as part of a unique programme, participate in their pre-announced BorCamino tours!

Hiking tour in the park forests along the Danube

As a young child (and let us be honest, even as an adult), many of us were amazed and attracted by the mysterious world of South American and African rainforests and jungles, the wild cats, the colourful birds, and the countless monkey species. The tours we offer may not be in America or on the African continent, but no matter how strange it may sound, we invite you into a rainforest now. How is it possible? The floodplain park forests along the Danube are the Central European counterparts of the tropical forests.

Wandering the Sokoró Hills (yellow)

Pannonhalma and its region are wonderful tourist destinations: after a visit to a historical building how about going for a hike in the Sokoró Hills. It would be a shame to miss it, go and see it for yourself!
