In 1956 the crowd gathered by what is today the Trianon Memorial and they knocked the red star off the huge Soviet memorial that stood there at the time.

City Hall

Built in Neo-Baroque style, this is a U-shaped, two-story building with monument status. This building is one of Győr's most renowned pieces of real estate, it is the city's symbol. From its tower, the folk song starting with the lyrics 'the wind blows off the old Danube' can be heard every hour and the bells chime at 11 AM and 5 PM. On October 25, 1956, the revolutionary crowd removed the red star from the building's facade and the Győr Council was formed here the next day.

Vaskakas Puppet Theater

The building has been in the service of the arts for over eighty years, today it is the home of the Vaskakas (Iron Rooster) Puppet Theater. Puppet theater is a genre not meant for any specific age group, thus, the theater features productions for adults and adolescents as well. In the Bartók Room, apart from the puppet shows, guest productions are also featured, pop and classical music concerts, literary readings, prosaic theater productions, folk dance, modern dance, and ballet performances. The city's cultural renown is largely due to the Győrkőcfesztivál (Children's Festival) established in 2008, which has become the largest event of its kind not only in Hungary but throughout Central Europe.
