Nowadays, the town of Veľký Meder is mainly known for its thermal waters; its spa and thermal park is a popular resort among both foreign and local tourists. The town has a rich history; the most famous story is perhaps the legend of Matthias Corvin, which is intertwined with the history of the town.

Tour planning

The town’s Reformed Church was built in Baroque style in 1784; its tower was constructed in 1801. Its tower clock was completed in 1838 but was stopped and its structure damaged in the 1960s. However, the clock was renovated, and it restarted in 2013. The monument erected on the 530th anniversary of receiving the city rights with the heraldic animal of Matthias Corvinus, the raven, on top is found in the immediate vicinity of the church.

In 1947, János Wagner opened his first pastry bakery and shop in Veľký Meder. After the Communist Party took power, he was allowed to continue working as an entrepreneur from 1990. In the renovated pastry shop in Veľký Meder he resumed the production and sale of cakes and pastry products, and worked until 2009, when he handed over his shop to his sons.

The bust in the main square of the town commemorates Béla Bartók, pianist, folk music researcher, and one of the most significant composers of the 20th century.

The folklore house in Veľký Meder was furnished in 1980 and presents the folk architecture and housing culture of a local peasant family at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. According to the inscription on the master beam of the first room, the thatched-roof residential house was built in 1836. The building consists of four rooms arranged one after the other. The original furnishings of the rooms (oven shovel, kneading bowl, churn, planer board, pepper mill, storage basket) were donated by locals. We find colourful plates on the walls, and milk jars, harvesters’ jug, and other kitchenware and utensils necessary for cooking on the shelves.

The memorial park at the end of King Saint Stephen Street was gradually created by the Csemadok association. There are five wooden gravestones in the memorial park, the most important ones being the gravestone made on the occasion of the 1100th anniversary of the conquest of Hungary, the gravestone made on the occasion of the 730th anniversary of the first written mention of the town, and the gravestone made in memory of 20th St. Stephen's Days and its initiator, László Kovács, former rural dean and parish priest of Veľký Meder (1976-2001).

According to the historical legend still alive in the town, King Matthias tied his horse to this tree. The people of Nagymegyer, who belonged to the former tribe of Megyer, had a special right until 1421; they paid taxes only to the king. In 1421, the new lords also started imposing taxes on the inhabitants of the town. The people could not accept this, and they turned to the ruler known as the just king, who visited Veľký Meder in disguise to investigate the complaint, and having found that the complaint was true, he promised to remedy it. As a result of the historical legend, the oak tree was later included in the former and present coat of arms of the town.

The thermal spa of Veľký Meder is the most important tourist attraction of the town. Thanks to its healing water, many foreign and domestic tourists visit the spa almost all year round. The spa is located in a very pleasant environment, an 80-hectare forest park, and has a total of 13 outdoor and indoor pools, all of which are operational 365 days a year.
